Garage floor coating: DIY kit vs professional
A kit costs less up front. Here is what the price difference buys.
Cost
| DIY kit | Professional epoxy | |
|---|---|---|
| Per sq ft | $2 – $5 + tools | $3 – $12 installed |
| 2-car garage (~360 sq ft) | $720 – $1,800 | $1,080 – $4,320 |
Sources: Angi (DIY $2–$5 per sq ft plus specialized tools; professional $3–$12). HomeGuide puts premade kits at $200–$700 (source).
What a professional install includes
- Surface preparation of the slab with grinding equipment before coating.
- Crack and chip repair, and a moisture check where needed.
- Multiple coats applied by a crew, with a written warranty.
Labor is a large part of the bill: Angi estimates $1–$7 per square foot, roughly a third to more than half of the total.
When DIY makes sense
A kit can suit a small, dry garage with sound concrete if you are comfortable renting prep equipment. For larger garages, cracked slabs or moisture problems, compare a professional quote first.
